In Haiti, maternal and infant mortality rates are the highest in the western hemisphere and among the highest in the world. In the remote regions of the country without electricity or running water, NGO Maison De Naissance instituted a network of traveling midwives to provide prenatal and basic medical care to their communities.
Portable Light assists these workers by providing them with a renewable light and power source that is portable and can be used in both typical house visits and in emergency night procedures. The integral USB out charges cell phones and electronic medical devices connecting the travelling midwife to physicians back at the clinics receiving support in “digitally diagnosing” patients.
The Rocky Mountain Institute, America’s leading think and do tank for renewable energy, is working with the Portable Light Team to scale the project.
